The six-times World Champion will train with the Fareham company for
one day as the prize in a draw among members nationwide.

“I like to think I know a bit about winning frames,” said Steve, “But I

it was time I actually learned how to put in a window!”

KJN proprietor Keith Newman said: “We only joined Network VEKA a few

Colours from Blair Neill

Blair Neill offers more than just colour
Network VEKA fabricator Blair Neill is enabling its installers to offer homeowners and specifiers the chance to put a stamp of individuality on their windows and doors.

Using advanced spray technology, Blair Neill can take high quality VEKA frames and bond a tough, permanent colour layer to the conventional white base.

These frames can be customised using any of the RAL shades, or by matching a colour sample of choice. This sprayed layer is both strong and scratch-resistant, and handles can be coloured to match.

The professionals at Blair Neill also offer the chance to personalise frames with more than just colour. Customers can decide if they want the finish to be intentionally textured, or smooth and simple. They can also specify varying degrees of shine, from the understated appearance of matt, to the reflective sheen of high gloss.

Peter Blair, MD of the Northern Ireland-based company explains that this facility is proving especially popular in the domestic and small commercial sectors. “The colour bonding service has really taken off, especially with all the variations we can offer. Specifiers are keen to use it at the new build and renovation stage to ensure that windows and doors fit with the desired look and feel of the building overall. We can even do two-tone frames, where the interior and exterior are different colours, and the inner can be chosen to complement the tone of your interior design ideas.”

Tony and Mandy Long’s new porch came with a big surprise – the windows and doors were free of charge to mark a milestone in Network VEKA’s history.
The family didn’t know when they ordered the extension for their Hull home that the components were the 160,000th installation by members since the group was formed in 1996. So it was a complete surprise when Andy Rose, proprietor of Waterside Windows handed back the cheque for over £700.
He even topped off the news with a bottle of bubbly from Network VEKA to mark the occasion.
“We’ve only been members for two years,” said Andy, based in nearby Barton-upon-Humber, “But it has really proved beneficial so we were very pleased to have helped to make a part of its history.”
Mandy added: “We were thrilled to hear we were getting the money back. I have never ever won anything in my life before this.”
The organisation is now heading towards its next milestone; members are close to achieving £600million of aggregated sales.

Addison Ousebank shows its green credentials with PVC-U recycling

“I find it astonishing that some people still don't know that PVC-U can be recycled.”

So says Ron Cox, of Bedford-based Network VEKA member Addison Ousebank, who is shocked that more installation companies don't tell their customers about the recycling opportunities available with PVC-U.

“People are often critical of it, without realising the many benefits. If an average PVC-U window frame lasts a minimum of 30 years, and can be recycled up to ten times - that's a window with a 300-year lifespan.

“Part of being a Network VEKA member involves attending various training courses, and it was during a sales course that we were made aware of VEKA Recycling.

“We researched it a little bit further because, to be honest, it seemed a bit too good to be true. We were told that the bins would be delivered almost immediately, and we could put in any type of PVC-U, both old and new, complete with gaskets, handles and reinforcements but less the glass.
“We emailed VEKA Recycling to give it a go, and it has been plain sailing since then. We simply ring them when the bin gets full and someone comes and collects it for us.

“It's rewarding because we know we are helping the environment, but also, on a more realistic level, it saves the company money by avoiding landfill, and also gives us an impressive sales edge over our competitors. Customers seem eager to invest in improvements which won't impact negatively on the environment and we are proud to tell them their old frames will be fully recycled and not sent to landfill.

“Considering the poor economic climate at the moment, I don't know why more companies don't take advantage of this opportunity. I can assure anyone that it is definitely the most cost-effective option for old frames by a big margin, and there are no 'catches'.”

Simon Scholes of VEKA Recycling said: “Ron and his wife Colette were aware that both domestic and commercial customers are increasingly keen to buy from companies with a 'green conscience' and they were looking for a good way to demonstrate these values. They have set an ideal example that all installers should consider following”

Network VEKA's Dave Hartley added: “Network VEKA is a bridge that links VEKA with the end-user, so it is natural that we do all we can to support installers in working with VEKA Recycling. Environmental issues are becoming increasingly prominent by the day, so it will give any installer the edge to be able to offer such a facility.”

Etiam gets the green light with 14001 – and a double ‘A’

Network VEKA fabricator Etiam Group has gained the sought-after ISO 14001 for its environmental practices and policies.

The group, which was formed with last year’s merger of Grosvenor Windows and Paramount Systems, has also announced that both companies now have the BFRC certification for an improved range of ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ windows.

“Green issues are becoming more and more important to both commercial and domestic customers,” said Darren Howarth, Operations Manager of the Bolton-based group.

“So, by achieving this internationally recognised certification, both Grosvenor and Paramount have shown their commitment to environmental practices for the manufacture, transportation and recycling of our products.”

ISO 14001 was launched worldwide in 2004 but to date less than 7,000 companies – that’s less than a quarter of a percent, in the whole of the UK – have actually attained the accreditation.

Etiam already has a proud track record of environmental achievement. Paramount was the first PVC-U fabricator in Lancashire – and one of the first in the UK – to attain the BFRC ‘A’ Rating and now both companies offer customers not only an ‘A’ Rated window but also improved ‘B’ and ‘C’ rated windows.

Picture: Darren Howarth with the Group’s new certificate.

Paramount tops customere satisfaction ratings - again!

Paramount Systems is proud to have been awarded a trophy recognising its commitment to ongoing customer satisfaction.

When the home improvement company merged with Grosvenor Windows to form The Etiam Group last year, it moved away from Leigh, to a custom built facility nearby in Bolton. Paramount was determined to reassure its existing customer base and prove that the quality of service would not suffer.

The fact that Paramount - as a member of the prestigious Network VEKA - has been voted best in the North West for customer satisfaction for the second year running shows that they are obviously carrying out this promise with enthusiasm.
Sales and Marketing Manager Barry Hurst received the trophy from snooker legend Steve Davis. He said “we're really proud to have won for the second time in two years, as it shows how consistently good our service is.

“We've made a lot of big decisions and we're delighted to see them working out so well, especially our showrooms at Bents Garden Centre and Bolton Arena, and the new spray shop we have built, which allows us to offer our customers windows and doors in a huge range of colours.”

Etiam is also celebrating in its own right. It saw its first anniversary this summer having received A, B and C window energy ratings and surpassing all its budget forecasts for the year.

‘Wish you were here,’ - Network VEKA calls to non-members

Network VEKA has issued its strongest-ever recruiting call with a ‘Wish you were here’ message from its Blackpool AGM.

MD John Ogilvie urged unaffiliated operators to tap into the strength of the organisation to help them to make the most of the current market conditions. Statistics already prove that members are far more likely than non-members to survive the hard times because of the support they gain from their membership, he told delegates.

“As well as the training, the technical and marketing support and the VEKA products, they also have the strength of our national brand identity, especially with the endorsement of Steve Davis at the core of that identity. “In fact, it is quite mystifying why so many in this industry insist on struggling on alone, whatever the consequences.”

He concluded: “To all of those unaffiliated fabricators and installers still trying to brave it out on their own, our message to them from Network VEKA, from Blackpool is ‘Wish you were here!’

New finance initiative planned
Installer members will be better equipped to beat the Credit Crunch with an improved consumer finance package to be announced soon. More and more sales are lost because homeowners are finding it tougher to raise bank loans, John Ogilvie told delegates, so Network VEKA is looking to launch new services giving members access to products such as interest-free or ‘pay later’ schemes.
He also pledged that the schemes would be available even to the smallest installers, with no minimum levels of business to qualify. Further details are expected soon.

In the spotlight
Following the main business session, five senior VEKA and Network VEKA figures took part in informal interview sessions with compere Paul Godwin. VEKA Group Chairman Andreas Hartleif, VEKA Recycling National Sales Manager Simon Scholes, Network VEKA MD John Ogilvie, VEKA plc MD Dave Jones and Colin Torley, who is VEKA representative on the Network VEKA Steering Group, spoke frankly on a number of topics. You can view excerpts of all the interviews at http://www.networkveka.co.uk/trade/video.htm or look for the Industry Talk link on the www.vekauk.com homepage.

Excellence rewarded
Later, more than 200 delegates and guests enjoyed dinner, cabaret, music and dancing But first, they applauded the 11 member companies that were recognised for their hard work in the annual Network VEKA Awards, presented by Steve Davis.

Overall winner, as well as Midlands regional winner, was Trent Valley Windows, taking the top award for the second year in succession. Meanwhile, Heavers of Bridport, in the South West region, became the only member ever to win the award nine times.

Aberdeen-based Thistle returned to the trophy table, taking the title for all of Scotland, while Classic of Carmarthenshire took the award for Wales. Also a special award was presented to Colin Richmond of Hallmark (Harrogate) for achieving £10million sales since the company joined Network VEKA in 1997.

Other regional winners were:
North East England & Yorkshire, David Brunskill; North West England, Paramount; East of England, NPS Glazing; South of England, KJM; Ireland, Windows 2000; South East, Elephant. See for yourself You can see a selection pictures, including the award winners, business session, dancing and cabaret on www.networkveka.co.uk/agm09

Steering Group changes
Network VEKA is responding to members and to demands of a changing market with a Steering Group that is more streamlined and includes an installer representative, said Chairman Peter Blair.

As well as Peter, of fabricator Blair Neill, the are: Eddie McGrath of Paramount; Charlie Berry of Andrew Wright; Steve Hancox of installer Goliath; Colin Torley on behalf of VEKA and John Ogilvie as MD.

Members travel 8,400 miles for Network training

Network VEKA members travelled from all over the country to take part in a second sell-out sales training event.

The event drew companies from far and wide following the previous sell-out session in October.

Membership Development Executive Karen Lund explained it had been a definite hit.

"It actually proved to be even more popular than the last one, in October. Delegates travelled from all over the UK to attend, with 19 people from nine member companies covering a collective distance of over 4,200 miles each way."

Network VEKA sets obligatory standards for training of relevant employees in both installation and surveying, but also encourages people to take optional, voluntary sales training such as this.

The course was free of charge, with evening meal also compliments of Network VEKA and as an extra incentive each participating member took home £100 of marketing vouchers.

These courses are consistently popular as Network VEKA is the only organisation to offer independent training free of charge as part of its membership package.

Participants received training on marketing from Network VEKA's Dave Hartley along with sales advice from specialist trainer John Digby. They were given a tour of the VEKA site, a briefing on environment and recycling from VEKA experts and a talk on the new product ranges including the new White on White window and the Amulet Door Range.

Network VEKA is already receiving enquiries for the next event, planned for the spring, and also aims to hold regional training days throughout the year on subjects including 'selling in a recession' and 'supporting small businesses'.

SUPPORT GROUP

Considering the current state of the window industry, and the effects of the much-publicised recession, it is evident that now, more than ever, installers need excellent support from their system suppliers.

VEKA has always kept its customers' welfare at the heart of all decisions, and in 1996 when the double glazing industry was too often associated with pushy salespeople and shoddy workmanship, we established Network VEKA as the ultimate support network for installers and fabricators. It was intended to raise standards across the industry, and to offer fabricators and installers the security of strength in numbers under a nationally recognised brand that stood for quality, value and integrity.

In tough times such as these, it comes as a great relief to installers to have the backing of an influential, global company, and a nationwide network of like-minded businesses facing similar trials and tribulations.

VEKA is a good example of a systems company building its business around the needs of its customers - it combines an extensive high-spec product range, one of the most advanced manufacturing and distribution operations in Europe with an unquestionable reputation for quality and technical excellence which is recognised the world over.

As part of the VEKA Group - the world's biggest privately-owned window systems company - we share an impressive portfolio of achievements which reflects on every VEKA customer; here are some VEKA group stats that you may not be aware of: VEKA Group employs 3000 people, turning over 720 million Euros, operates 28 thriving subsidiaries across three continents and operates 280 extrusion lines. VEKA AG (the German parent company) has been awarded the prestigious 'Trophee International de l'industrie' which has also been won by companies such as Microsoft, IBM and Porsche, as well as receiving the internationally coveted 'Ethics in Business' award for the Group's outstanding environmental and social commitment.

VEKA plc is able to take advantage of the latest innovations in European technology design and the Group's extensive Research and Development resources, and can then utilise these results to create the perfect product ranges for installers in the UK marketplace.

To reinforce our technical credentials a VEKA window was the first to be awarded an 'A' under the new energy ratings system.

VEKA plc offers three classic window systems, the hugely popular Matrix 58 and 70mm chamfered systems and the Matrix fully sculptured system. Within the last two years we have also launched a range of new product options to provide our installer network with additional revenue streams. The Vertical Slider and Fully Reversible window systems, along with the Amulet composite door range were all developed to give our customers a sales edge over their competitors when they needed it most. The new In-Line Sliding Patio door is also about to be released, and shows our commitment to providing installers with the best tools to do their job.

Environmental issues are a universally growing concern, and increasing numbers of homeowners are looking to buy products from companies with a 'green conscience'.

Germany leads the way with environmental solutions, having already banned PVC from general waste and landfill. The UK is following suit with taxes on landfill, but VEKA is taking inspiration from its German partners and actively promoting PVC-U recycling and eco-friendly products.

VEKA was the first window systems company to establish its own old to new window recycling plant and currently operates recycling plants in Germany, France and the UK. We have our own processing plant in Kent, and we will shortly be offering recycling facilities from our East Lancs manufacturing base.

Over the next decade, the consumer demand will grow for more and more ecologically-friendly home improvements and VEKA is keen to stay ahead of the curve in providing the most innovative products and services. This will ensure that our installers are also ahead of the game.

John Ogilvie:

VEKA has been committed to customer support for many years, not only providing top-quality products, in-depth technical support along with marketing advice and installation information.

In 1996 this support system took a leap forward when a number of VEKA's top fabricators and installers came together to form Network VEKA.

In 1996 the double glazing industry was plagued by cowboy operators and the industry was tainted. VEKA plc was the only company in the industry that had the foresight to develop an innovative idea like this.

The principle was, and still is, to ensure customers are treated fairly, by an organisation that strictly polices itself, to offer consistently high standards and a unique array of insurance backed guarantees and promises.

Network VEKA has over the last twelve years become one of the leading national brands in the window industry. The provision of subsidised marketing materials to all of our members help them to benefit from our investment.

Network VEKA is independently controlled and directed by the membership, but VEKA remains the perfect partner, offering its valuable support and worldwide reputation for technical excellence.

In recent months, the whole industry has been left struggling. There is no doubt that the market will recover, but this is a slow process and we can assume there will be more business casualties in the meantime. Network VEKA members, however, have benefited from a much more secure and manageable position than their competitors throughout the downturn. Compared with industry declines of over 20%, a number of member companies have experienced only a small decline in sales while others have seen sales grow.

This is because, especially in a recession, people tend to spend on trusted brands. Some may be tempted to go for 'cheap and cheerful' and novelty special offers, but there are vast numbers of homeowners who are more willing to invest in peace of mind, which is something that Network VEKA can offer in abundance. With its fail-safe series of guarantees, it is unlike anything else in the industry.

Installer members offer Network's package of insurance backed guarantees including - deposit and staged payment protection and the sought after 10 year insurance backed guarantee.

These offerings make their sales pitch much more influential, help day-to-day cash flow and enable them to increase their order value to slightly higher than the industry average.

Network VEKA has spent £millions building an enviable consumer brand using TV, radio, consumer magazines, local advertising, direct mail and every other imaginable promotional medium, which members are able to take full advantage of. This year Network VEKA has launched its own lead generation programme to feed quality leads to it members.

Our Installers are also supported by the Network VEKA brand ambassador, six-times World Snooker Champion Steve Davis, who like Network VEKA, represents long-term consistency and professionalism. they can use the Steve Davis imagery in a range of ready prepared marketing materials.

Installer members are proud to display the Network VEKA brand because their customers know that the organisation represents quality and trust.

Network VEKA is currently issuing its strongest ever call to non-members, recognising that the industry downturn has made it extremely tough for companies to go it alone. Experienced personnel will be on hand at Wembley G09 to speak to visitors about Network VEKA's many advantages as well as VEKA's extended range of products and support package.

Gemini steps in to help the elderly

VEKA fabricator and installer Gemini UPVC has saved the day for elderly residents of an extra-care retirement home, by completing a large contract for Equity Housing Association.

Equity was left stranded when a previous company ceased to trade after installing only three windows. The HA quickly got in touch with Manchester Glass which called in Gemini to the rescue.

The Network VEKA member immediately stepped in to complete the extensive project in Stockport, and the work was carried out without problem. Gemini installed 19 bay windows, seven DDA compliant doors and 103 windows, making every effort to cause minimal disturbance to the residents.

The contract also required the supply and installation of 257 windows and 19 doors in 53 nearby social housing properties.

The entire contract was completed within just six weeks, using VEKA's fully-sculptured Matrix FS.

Gemini's MD Michael Griffiths said, "We take pride in every job we carry out, but it's particularly rewarding in a situation like this. We wanted to help, and the result is a very happy customer, and several much warmer and more secure residences."

Network VEKA goes on TV with golf sponsorship

More than a million sports fans will get the Network VEKA message, thanks to a sponsorship deal the organisation has signed with the golfing EuroPro Tour.

All 14 of the two-day events will each be given two hours' coverage on Sky Sports 1,2 and 3, with Network VEKA branding featuring widely around each course.

"This is a highly effective way of putting the brand in front of homeowners throughout Britain and Ireland," said Network VEKA Marketing Manager Dave Hartley.

"It is also a way for members to see for themselves the kind of support this organisation is putting behind the brand on their behalf – and for non-members can see what they are missing!

"As well as the broadcasts themselves, the material will feature on literally dozens of associated websites, each one adding to the overall exposure."

The events take place at some of the best-known courses in Britain and Ireland and will continue until mid-October.

Another sporting event brought Network VEKA, VEKA and Glazerite an unexpected branding spin-off recently. Each put their names to a race when the Northants fabricator held a hospitality event at Towcester Racecourse and, as well as the success of the event itself, they gained a namecheck in over 800,000 copies of newspapers that listed the race card on sports pages.

Heavers is top of the region – nine times over!

A Dorset home improvements manufacturer has become the only company ever to
win an organisation’s Customer Satisfaction Award an amazing nine times. The
award, from the independent glazing trade organisation Network VEKA, means Heavers
of Bridport Ltd has broken last year's record of eight wins, which it shared
with a Yorkshire company.

Heavers’ win, for the South West region, was
calculated after Network VEKA analysed the Customer Satisfaction returns of nearly
16,000 households – every single customer of every member company for the
whole year.

A representative from Heavers was unable to attend the organisation's
recent AGM in Blackpool, so Network VEKA MD John Ogilvie received the trophy
on their behalf. It was presented by snooker legend Steve Davis who works as
ambassador for Network VEKA, endorsing its standards and guarantees in members’ advertising.

The six-times World Champion later sent a message to Heavers saying: “This
is a superb achievement. To be such a consistent winner gives a clear message
to all of your customers, past and future and I hope they all appreciate the
 value of that.”

Network VEKA has launched a dedicated lead generation website to collate prospects' details for distribution directly to members.

Consumers are driven to the site, www.yourperfecthome.co.uk by a variety of methods including search engine optimisation, pay-per-click links and adverts in lifestyle magazines and newspapers, with the possibility of a radio campaign to follow.

It was an important factor to create a dedicated system for Network VEKA, according to Managing Director John Ogilvie:

"Some third party providers may sell the leads many times over and they may not all be specific to our product range," he said.

"With this system, any leads generated by Network VEKA will be kept in-house and passed solely to the nearest participating member."

He added: "We all know that Network VEKA is about brand value, standards, guarantees and reputation but we have to evolve to meet new challenges and lead generation is more relevant in this economic climate than ever."

Its walls are made of hemp and lime…it has passive solar gain heating and rainwater harvesting…and its owners are committed environmentalists – but their new eco-house has PVC-U windows throughout.

These windows, along with extensive bi-folds, were supplied by Cornish Network VEKA fabricator Wunderplas, whose MD David Vine said it all began when the family visited the St Austell showroom to ask about bi-fold doors:

"We talked about the plan as a whole and I soon realised what a fascinating project it was but they had reservations about PVC-U window frames.

"In the end, after extensive study, they chose PVC-U for their windows and balcony doors and had to present their findings and seek special permission from planners to use the material instead of wood – which was then granted.

"PVC-U is completely recycleable, its windows have zero air permeability and its manufacture has a much lower carbon footprint than aluminium."

The three-storey house, high above the sea on Cornwall's Roseland Peninsula, has frames in VEKA's Anthracite foil on the top floor and a bespoke mid grey foil below, all based on VEKA Matrix 58 profile.

Its appearance blends into the local built environment with a facing of reclaimed waste granite on the side visible from the road.

Network VEKA cracks the crunch

– and grows its market share

Network VEKA members are measurably less vulnerable to the economic downturn than unaffiliated installers, according to new figures.
The organisation calculates that members’ registered installations were down only slightly last year against an overall industry estimated decline of 15-20%.

Managing Director John Ogilvie said: “At the same time, we are enjoying an all-time record number of enquiries from potential members so installers clearly realise that, even when budgets are tight, they need the right kind of national support, the right credentials, and a competitive advantage to put in front of their customers.”

He added that, in a shrinking market, the figures mean Network VEKA is growing in overall share.
“Also, members’ Average Installation Value is around £3,500, which is still 40% above the industry average.”
He concluded: “Times are changing for everyone and no one is completely immune but the figures bear out what we always said – that if Network VEKA was a valuable working tool in the good times, it is even more so when times get tough.

“There are no magic solutions for anyone but Network VEKA installers getting the basics right with a good, solid, value-based consumer proposition, have a far better chance of coming through the downturn.”

The scheme of things

Look on the back of any van, whether it’s a painter, plumber or Pilates teacher and chances are you will see a dazzling array of logos and ‘quality marks’ from all manner of guilds and associations, clubs and cliques.
Some of them probably have a real value – but which ones? In many cases, the homeowner may rightly suspect the only condition of membership is the subscription cheque doesn’t bounce.
We all know in the industry that there are many valid and worthwhile Registered Installer Schemes but do the customers know what they are – and if not, what is the benefit?
At Network VEKA, we set out from day one to be much more than an RIS. We aimed to be a structured and disciplined body with a strong consumer proposition of quality assurance – and also the mechanism and the budget to convey that message to the homeowner. To back up such an ethical stance, it was also important to have a level of transparency that confirmed our commitment to paying more than lip-service to our regime of policing.
Nearly 14 years down the line – and in a much tougher trading environment – that decision has proved itself to be the right one in every way and while no one is immune to the industry’s troubles, we can safely say our members on average are weathering the storm far better than unaffiliated operators.
Something that is clear to anyone, whether Network VEKA or any Registered Installer Scheme, is that this industry benefits from any kind of professional infrastructure and would probably be a lot worse off if such things had never existed. They create valuable lines of communication among installers and, where they do enforce standards and conditions, they offer some reassurance to customers. Less tangibly but equally important, true RISs create a sense of belonging that encourages many to take a little more pride in what they do.
However, as I said earlier, setting standards is only half the fight; they are not much good if the public don’t know who you are or what you are about. Even in the early days, we have made consumer advertising and PR an essential part of our mix and this has gained a massive boost in the last few years from our association with Steve Davis. Whether it is through his presence in local and national advertising and on the VEKA truck fleet livery or from our logo on his familiar waistcoats in televised tournaments, his imagery and endorsement are now a familiar sight and very much a part of the personality of Network VEKA.
To any organisation with a more modest budget, the Internet provides an excellent medium for proclaiming any quality assurance message, giving an inexpensive platform for laying out your standards and conditions in full. Our members have often commented that our Customer Charter is the most powerful statement we make but, for anyone with a little less to spend, the world is now at a stage where a large proportion of consumers seeking home improvements will use the web as part of their decision process. This brings us neatly to another – and a very tangible – benefit of any RIS as a lead generator. If the customer is drawn to the central point of the RIS, the leads can be trickled down to a grateful membership.
Many of the benefits that Network VEKA members enjoy are probably out of reach of the average RIS, such as our broad range of bespoke literature and our own unique IBGs, not to mention training programmes and advertising budget. Some however are more attainable but may be underexplored – group buying and extended guarantees on components come to mind.
Whatever the structure, motives and benefits of any Registered Installer Scheme, may I pass on a thought from our own experience as a membership-based trade organisation.
Firstly, for anyone who is not a member, it is worth giving it a thought. If you are already but don’t think you are getting much out of it, ask yourself: “Am I putting enough into it?”
Very many Network VEKA members will testify that you will reap as you sow. Put your best effort into it; make the most of what is on offer – and the rewards will be yours.

Network VEKA is to repeat its popular sales training course but with extra features in response to demand from members.

''We have listened carefully to their questions,'' said Membership Development Executive Karen Lund.

''Many want to know more about things like projecting the Network VEKA message and making better use of all the marketing support and materials available. They also want to know more about non-specific sales techniques so that will still be at the core of the training.'' The two-day course is free of charge and member companies can bring as many sales-minded staff as they choose.

Karen added: ''If they need any more financial incentive to sign up, Monday evening's dinner will be on Network VEKA as well.''

The course will once again be headed by specialist trainer John Digby at Burnley but this time with more input from other Network VEKA and VEKA specialists, plus the opportunity to visit the VEKA plant and the Big Rig mobile exhibition unit.

It will be held on October 13/14. Karen has more details on 01282 473170, 07801 640625. Network VEKA sets strict minimum standards of training for installation and surveying as part of its overall quality assurance message to consumers but also offers training in other disciplines, such as sales, on a voluntary basis and recommends members to make the most of them.

Picture: John Digby at an earlier training session

For further information, please contact:
John Ogilvie, Network VEKA, 01282 473170, (fax) 473175

Notes for Editors: Network VEKA is a group of around 140 independent window companies that share a collective brand identity in return for upholding a series of rules governing quality, service and guarantees.

Its members share the common bond of using materials manufactured by VEKA plc.
VEKA fabricator Metrolite Industries is keeping production up to speed, thanks to the donation of a new compressor from manufacturer Ingersoll Rand.

Metrolite, a part of Wigan Metropolitan Council, needed a new £5,000 compressor to power its fabrication machinery after one of its two existing units broke down. Ingersoll Rand had donated the original compressors when the facility was set up 30 years ago, and knew of its contribution to the local community, so the manufacturer stepped in again to donate the replacement machine.

Metrolite holds Supported Workshop status, providing employment and training for local people with disabilities.
Network welcomes a record eight...and evicts one

Network VEKA is celebrating a record intake of eight new members accepted at the latest Steering Group meeting.
But the same body reinforced the organisation's commitment to upholding standards by suspending one existing member.

The eight new members, including two in Ireland, are especially welcome in today's industrial climate, according to Membership Executive Amy Steven.

''It shows that more and more businesses recognise the benefit of being supported within a group structure like Network VEKA,'' she said.

''But with increasing casualties throughout the industry, it also shows we are able to keep numbers up ahead of the decline.''

One of the eight is a returning former member. Lancashire fabricator Sovereign is relaunching its Sovereign Direct trade division and will now be able to offer customers a route to gaining their own membership.

Also joining are three other fabricator/installers, Stevenswood of Livingston, Jones Window Systems, St Helens; Logik Window & Door Co, Hinckley; and four installers, Central Scotland Joinery, Grangemouth; P&M Sinclair Conservatories, Edinburgh; Castle Glass, Castlederg, Co Tyrone, And Carpentry Plus of Trim, Co Meath, RoI.

Every membership application must be approved by the organisation's elected Steering Group, which meets six times a year.

The suspended company has been contacted and will cease using the organisation's imagery, literature and guarantees but all its existing Network VEKA guarantees will of course remain valid.

Picture: Amy Steven: ''More and more businesses recognise the benefit''

Network's better than ever, says members' poll

Network VEKA has scored its highest rating ever in its quarterly survey of members' satisfaction.
The organisation, better known for surveying every one of 16,000 customers every year, regularly turns the tables on itself and asks members to rate it for various aspects of service.

Members in the latest poll gave the organisation an overall 4.6 out of 5 with none of the six service categories earning less than 4.4 and one reaching 4.9.

Each was asked to score the organisation separately for: communication, opportunity to raise issues, guarantee registration, marketing support, installer training/audits, approachable staff and general helpfulness. The totals were aggregated to give the overall figure.

''It is very encouraging to know we are so close to members' expectations,'' said Managing Director John Ogilvie.
''But even more encouraging, where some members scored us down a notch in any category, they added constructive comments that will help us to aim even higher next quarter.''

Network's heading for the half billion...and Steve's back on TV

Network VEKA members are just weeks away from reaching their biggest milestone ever - £500million of accumulated sales.

Meanwhile, the organisation has also announced it will run a third burst of TV advertising throughout the autumn.
The milestone comes from more than 125,000 installations around Britain and Ireland since the organisation was founded less than 12 years ago.

Members took nearly five years to reach the first £100million sales, back in 2001, but last year, Network VEKA announced it had bucked the industry slowdown by adding its fourth £100million in a record 18 months. Now members are forecast to beat even that in reaching the half a billion mark.

Managing Director John Ogilvie says the organisation is proving even more vital to the industry in the tough market than it was in the better times.

''Members not only enjoy an Average Installation Value around 50% higher than the industry norm,'' he added.
''But it is also clear that, in today's market, the casualty rate among unaffiliated operators is significantly higher than among members.''

Members also benefit from the organisation's industry-leading Ten-Year Insurance Backed Guarantee, an exceptional marketing support package and a collective brand identity, which includes the endorsement of snooker celebrity Steve Davis.

Network VEKA has also decided to run a third burst of TV adverts featuring Steve Davis throughout the autumn.
In the wake of the success of the two previous bursts, in spring and last autumn, the ad will appear in about 700 slots on a range of digital channels.

"Conservatory job is finished by kind firms"

A generous Network VEKA member has stepped in to help a grandmother to celebrate her 80th birthday, according to The Huddersfield Daily Examiner.

Mrs Pamela Marshall had paid another local company £9,500 for a new conservatory but the work stopped when the company received the last instalment and she had to postpone plans to hold her birthday party in the conservatory. Soon after, the Examiner reported on a number of other local homeowners left in the same predicament by the same company.

To the rescue came local Network VEKA member Sash Windows. The company not only finished off the conservatory but also enlisted two associate companies, David Harrison & Sons and Jowett Carpets, to add a heater and carpet.Sash sales manager Jason Dickinson said it was disgusting the way the other company had treated Mrs Marshall.

IThe case really highlights how important it is to go to a trustworthy company that is a member of Network VEKA," he added.

Network VEKA defeats Everest!

Network VEKA has once again proved its motto "Reliable in the extreme" by flying the flag at the highest point on earth.
The feat comes courtesy of James Ogilvie, brother of Network MD John, who conquered Mount Everest in aid of charity.
"I feel privileged to be one of the few people ever to have stood at the top of the world," said James, a seasoned adventurer and author of the travel guide "Adventure Holidays Worldwide."
"And I'm very grateful to Network VEKA for helping me to realise my dream."
The trade organisation part-sponsored the expedition, to raise funds for the charity Tree Aid, which helps to alleviate poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This is not the first time Network VEKA has gone to extremes. Three years ago, it sponsored the first ever crossing of the Gobi Desert by kite buggy, a feat which was later recognised by Guinness World Records.
The ascent also continues a family tradition; James and John's cousin, Stephen Venables was the first Brit to ascend Everest without the use of oxygen.

Paramount\'s \'Royal-flushed\' with UK\'s biggest home conservatory

Network VEKA member Paramount Window Systems has been commissioned to create what is thought to be the UK\'s biggest-ever domestic conservatory, at a house in Chester that was formerly owned by the Queen.

The bespoke installation, based on the VEKA Matrix 70 profile with a lantern-design portal roof from Sash UK, will cover over 2,500sq ft of floor space and represent a significant six-figure investment for the homeowner.
\'\'Its design takes the form of three conservatories in one,\'\' said Eddie McGrath, Managing Director of the Lancashire-based fabricator.

\'\'It is effectively two large constructions connected by a third to form an S-shape, and will eventually house a swimming pool, gym and snooker room.\'\'
He added: \'\'This will be a very impressive addition to a beautiful classical home. Quite aside from its commercial value, this installation will be a real pleasure for all of us.\'\'

As a whole, the project will take several weeks, including dismantling an existing timber conservatory.
The house, on the outskirts of the city, was formerly the Queen\'s official Cheshire residence and the Royal Crest can still be seen on the building.

A special hospital newborn baby unit is over £3,000 better off, thanks to generous members and guests at Network VEKA\'s recent AGM weekend.
Delegates had raised £500 in a prize draw for five winners to take on snooker ace Steve Davis at a frame of pool each. Then, at the evening event, more than 250 diners added a further £700 in a game of Heads & Tails. Two VEKA fabricators contributed £2,000 between them when Dave Walker of Hull-based Vulcan Windows bid £400 for an autographed cue and Dennis Thorpe of Future Products of Mansfield added a fantastic £1,600 with the winning bid for the pool table itself.
Network VEKA\'s Shelley Crocombe and VEKA Big Rig Co-ordinator Andy Goodman recently travelled to the Neonatal Unit at Birmingham Women\'s Hospital to hand over the cheque in person to Neonatal Sister Tracey Budding. Andy and wife Lisa have special reason to be grateful to the hospital.
Steve Davis was special guest at the AGM and dinner in his role as brand ambassador for Network VEKA, appearing on advertising and marketing material for members.

Network VEKA members have been urged to go on offering quality and added value as the best defence against being dragged into the price wars that threaten to devastate the industry.

Managing Director John Ogilvie said many players were guilty of “a remarkable piece of self-harming” by engaging in mindless price-fighting.

“We’ve all heard of panic-buying,” he told a record crowd of over 150 delegates and guests at the organisation’s AGM, at the Marriott Forest of Arden.

“What we are seeing in the industry today is panic-selling…the inexplicable phenomenon of traders trying to limbo under each other’s plummeting job quotations, then wondering why they go bust when they are so busy.

He advised: “What we can do as Network VEKA members is continue to offer products and services with the kind of genuine, visible added value that will put clear blue water between us and the price-fighters and enable us – and our products – to stand head and shoulders above them.

“Let them squabble; let them cut their own throats. If we hold our nerve and go on believing 100% in what we are, what we offer…and what we are worth, then an overwhelming majority of us will still be around after they are long gone.”

Industry analyst Mike Rigby echoed John’s comments, adding his own call to members to look to diversification and emerging markets for future prosperity.

Some national players had grown by moving into other home improvement areas while the one that stuck with windows had shrunk dramatically, he told delegates.

He forecast growth in markets such as older and disabled homeowners and future innovations like remote and central locking systems, then concluded by telling members:
“Network VEKA is a fantastic package. Their compliance will now be monitored.
“It is never a comfortable decision, especially in a difficult market,” said Network VEKA Managing Director John Ogilvie.

“But when our reputation is built on strict adherence to the standards we set, we really have no choice but to uphold those standards.

“Obviously we want to boost membership numbers as much as possible but we will not do that at any cost; a slight setback in numbers is a small price for averting a string of dissatisfied customers.”

Both of the companies had been accepted as members within the previous 12 months.
Suspensions are far less common since the organisation raised its vetting standards for new applicants in 2004 but up to that point it had excluded around six members a year.
Network VEKA backs solid-roof conservatory trend

Britain looks set to follow Ireland in a growing demand for the ‘Sunlounge’ solid-roofed conservatory, according to Network VEKA.

One member in Co. Armagh is distributing its own patent-pending prefabricated Sunlounge roof system into Britain via two major members and early uptake shows a growing interest in the new style.

Craigavon-based Delta Trading saw a dramatic swing in the Irish market in the last two years and MD Charlie Woods is confident of growing demand across the water.

“Of course, they will never replace the traditional conservatory in many locations,” he said.
“But any installer who can offer both will have a very powerful advantage.”

Network VEKA members JP McFadyen, in Scotland’s Central Belt, and Nottinghamshire-based Consort are bringing in a growing number of the roofs for retail and trade as well as a number of showsites.

Sunlounges are said to blend in better with the house they adjoin; they stay cooler in the summer and, despite a higher initial outlay, they are said to retain their full installed price in the house’s resale value.

One USP claimed by the Delta roof over similar prefabricated systems is that it is structurally certified to take more weight than even the heaviest roofing material. For example, a four by four metre structure can take four tonnes – or more than two large family cars.
The showsite units have sparked dozens of enquiries, especially in Scotland but, as Consort Sales & Marketing Director Stuart Buchanan explained, the planning picture is more complex there.

“It is more relaxed in England and Wales but in Scotland it can vary much more from one area to another. Many authorities are unsure about anything new but I am sure the reaction will improve when they become more accepted.”

MdFadyen’s MD Paul McFadyen says in some parts of Ireland he has seen solid roofs on nine out of ten conservatories: “I wouldn’t be too surprised if they grew to 75% of the market over here.
“We have just put one on our showsite in Edinburgh; we have built a few for retail customers and we are actively promoting them through our trade division, TWD Scotland.

Delta is also offering training days for fitters on either side of the water.

It shows very clearly how the fabricators have been able to respond positively to the feedback from their customers by identifying weak points, then working to improve them.?
Each of nearly 100 installer members is regularly asked to appraise the 15-plus trade fabricators who supply them, across a number of parameters such as product quality, service, prompt delivery etc.

The survey is an essential part of Network VEKA?s strict quality control regime, which also includes polling every single customer ? some 16,000 every year ? to evaluate the installers on similar parameters. The results show that members collectively earn a 97% rating, as against a recognised industry average for all home improvements of less than 85%.

Network welcomes back a trio of ?prodigals?

Network VEKA is celebrating the return of three former members among its latest intake of recruits ? with the prospect of a fourth under discussion.

The companies had left the organisation voluntarily to try going it alone but have now come back to enjoy the benefits of group trading the Network way.

Among the returners is Weathermaster of Whitehaven, Cumbria, whose MD Neal Holmes admits he had not made the most of membership the first time round. His turning point was seeing the achievements of Plymouth-based Stormseal South West, when he met MD Paul Murphy at an event run by their fabricator, Consort.
? He had completely transformed the company ? and its sales ? by making full use of the Network VEKA marketing package,? said Neal, ?Now I plan to do the same.?

Weathermaster has already undergone an image makeover, showroom design and new vehicle livery in the Network VEKA style and has a number of advertising projects underway.
The Network VEKA Steering Group has also approved the readmission of CIS, with premises in Carlisle and Dumfries, and Aurora Window Manufacturers of Glasgow and at least one other company is in talks with the organisation.

Network VEKA Managing Director John Ogilvie said: ?We are delighted to be welcoming these old friends back into our ranks.
? Their return shows very clearly that life is getting tougher for those companies going it alone while the security of group membership is becoming ever more relevant to any business.?

Sovereign Group unveils massive expansion plan

Window manufacturer Sovereign Group has announced a major expansion programme that will double the size of its 75,000sq ft HQ and factory in Nelson, Lancashire.

The plan was unveiled today (June 21) on the Group?s stand at Housing 2005, the Chartered Institute of Housing Exhibition in Harrogate.

Sovereign has been growing steadily since it underwent a management buy-out by MD Glenn Taylor and Finance Director John Mackie five years ago but up to now it has been land-locked in its Vale Street factory. It has now acquired the factory next door that was made vacant earlier this year with the receivership of a local company.

Glenn Taylor said: ?The move will enable us to continue growing in response to our increasing penetration in social and commercial development.?

Sovereign operates on a national basis with a large proportion of its work in and around Greater London. Its key public sector accounts include Fusion 21, Orbit, English Churches Housing Group, Anchor, Johnnie Johnson and Places for People and it is registered with LHC and OGC Buying Solutions.

It is not the only company to have brought new life to a neighbouring former high employment site in East Lancashire. Its main supplier, VEKA plc, created a new ?10million warehouse and logistics centre based on the former Lucas works next door to its own factory in nearby Burnley.
